IAF Officer Loses ₹1 Crore in Fake Trading App Scam via WhatsApp Group

An IAF officer from Suratgarh just lost more than a crore in a trading app scam, and it’s honestly a textbook example of how slick these fraudsters have become.

He was drawn in through a WhatsApp group called 55 Shoonya Growth Club, where members shared stock tips and promised high returns. From there, they convinced him to use a fake trading app, and over time, he continued to transfer money, believing he was investing. By the time he went to his bank and noticed something was off, it was already too late.

Police say the scammers kept the whole thing going by spreading it out over multiple transactions, which made it harder to notice right away. A case has now been registered with the cyber police in Sriganganagar.

This kind of scam seems to be everywhere now: fraudulent apps, fake “expert” groups, and promises of easy profit. Anyone here seen or been added to groups like this on WhatsApp or Telegram?

That’s rough to read, but not surprising. These “growth clubs” and trading groups are popping up everywhere on WhatsApp and Telegram. They usually start with free tips to build trust, then slowly push people toward their fake apps or shady platforms. Once you’re hooked, they make it look like you’re earning, but withdrawals never happen.

The best thing anyone can do is never trust random groups or apps for investments. If you want to trade, stick to registered brokers and check SEBI’s list before putting in even a rupee.

This is precisely why scammers target professionals. People assume they’re too smart or disciplined to fall for it, but these groups are designed to exploit trust. The WhatsApp angle makes it feel “personal” because you see other members chatting and sharing fake profits, which tricks your brain into thinking it’s legit.

I’ve been added to a couple of these groups myself, and the pattern is always the same: small wins are shown upfront, then pressure is applied to invest larger amounts. Once they drain you, the group suddenly disappears. Reporting and awareness are the only ways to slow them down.
